The 10 Safest Cities in the United States

We all want to live in a safe neighborhood; it’s a basic human need. When you’re moving to a new area and looking for homes for sale, you may often wonder which neighborhoods are the safest. One way of determining this is by looking at which neighborhoods are the least likely to file a claim with their home or auto insurance company. Insurance Providers has put together a list of America’s safest neighborhoods. Here is their complete article with their findings (complete state-by-state listings below):

How We Did It

To compile our reports, we collected information on three safety factors:

  1. Crime rate: we collected info from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Statistics on the violent crime rate, by city, per 100,000 people. This data aggregates of all the violent crime: assaults, homicides, armed robbery, and so forth.
  2. Likelihood of natural disaster: We gathered data from the United States Geological Survey and NOAA to determine how likely a disaster was to strike a city, and put each city on a 1 to 50 ranking, 1 being the safest.
  3. Driving safety: Finally, Allstate had the courtesy to compile a list of the safest cities to drive in America. We took out the average number of years between accidents experienced by drivers in each city.

Then we weighted each type of accident according to likelihood, and found that the results were interesting, to say the least.

Crime Was Not a Predictor for the Best … But Definitely for the Worst

You’d think crime rates would have a major influence on safety, but that isn’t the case.

For example, as crime goes, New York City — although it pulled a mediocre 43 out of 73 overall , which confirms every stereotype about New York drivers ever — is actually pretty safe, with a violent crime rate of .55% per 100,000 people. Not bad for the big city.

Although a high crime rate guaranteed you a lower spot most of the time, there are some surprises. For example, Detroit is not the most dangerous city in our rankings, despite having the highest crime rate. It comes close, though.
