This Market Is Not “Business as Usual” – It’s “Brutal as Usual”

"It’s important to re-train, re-think, and respond in kind with the re-tooled knowledge and skills to practice real estate effectively in one of the most challenging times in our history."

My real estate broker/manager came to me recently to ask if I would speak to the sales group at our weekly staff meeting about some of the things I’ve been doing recently to account for the amount of sales production I’ve had in the first half of the year.

First, I would like to state upfront that I hate “boasting” or sounding like a hubristic boar (I’m a great man – in my own mind) and I am a firm believe that once you start getting a big head about how great you think you are, you stand to lose your focus and things can take a turn for the worse. 7 Strategies to Stay in the Groove

I have noticed that in almost all sales – Real Estate is no exception – salespeople tend to have up and down cycles in their sales stream. Most just attribute this to luck but I think there is more to it than that. I think they work hard to create leads and then when they are working the leads they stop generating new ones.

This creates a cycle where leads are generated, then there are sales, then there’s a down period, and the cycle begins again. In my opinion, it is important to cut out the down periods by continually creating new leads and improving all systems.

It seems that the same type scenario occurs in all phases of our business. Whether we are working on leads, systems, or marketing. We get motivated and work hard to generate or improve and then we cycle into a sloppy phase.

So…my question is how do we stay motivated to continually improve our lead generation techniques, systems, marketing, etc.?

Here are some ideas to stay in the groove: Continue reading this post

Lifelong Learning

One of the keys to Real Estate or almost anything else, in my opinion, is lifelong learning.

I hear a lot of criticism of the various designations that REALTORS attain. Much of life is in the journey and not the destination, so when I see Realtors with “alphabet soup” past their names – I think that they must have been on a good journey!

Will the alphabet soup mean that they are good Realtors? Probably not, but it will tell you that they are willing to invest in themselves and their profession.
I will grant to you that people have different ways of investing in learning but the designations are one tangible sign that a particular Realtor is interested in becoming better at their profession. Just like a college degree does not ensure that a graduate is competent but does signify a certain level of willingness, ability, and perseverance.

All that said, my wife and I spent last week working on our CRS designation (Certified Residential Specialist) in Key Largo, Florida. Continue reading this post

Our Guest Blogger List Grows

Our next guest blogger comes to us from Denver, Colorado. Please welcome Kristal Kraft of The Berkshire Group.

Kristal has been a real estate broker in Colorado since 1984. She started “blogging” in 2000 when she went on a bike tour around the world, although the term blog was not mainstream then.

She incorporates her passion for blogging into her blog, Denver Dwellings. Her online set up is a nice example of how to effectively stem a blog from the main real estate website.

Kristal’s professional designations include: ABR, e-PRO, CRS, CIPS, GRI, REALTOR® and the Performance Management Network designation.

Stay tuned for Kristal’s blog post next week that opens the debate about whether standards for Realtors should be implemented. Continue reading this post
