Great gadgets. When I started working full-time I told my husband that he would have to start helping around the home a little. So I gave him two jobs to do – taking out the rubbish and hoovering (or vacuuming as you say in the US). The next day he brought home an irobot. Needless to say I wasn’t too pleased. However, that little thing is great. I come home and it looks as though the faires have been. Plus it does a much better job at hoovering that my husband! All we need now is a robot that takes out the garbage!

These are all great options, but I can’t recommend the fake camera solution (number 5) as I believe a lot of professional thieves are aware of the dummy cameras on the market and would spot them a mile away! Really, you should invest in a real camera if you can afford it, as it might even lower your home insurance premiums (and perhaps your car insurance premiums if you park under the camera too!)

I’m an advocate of using many different types of security technology and not relying too heavily on anything, but I must say I really like the idea of wireless alarms that you can rig up in your house however is best for you. That way, you can remove cables which are often targeted by clever thieves looking to bypass the sensors and siren. It should also allow you to put elements in hard-to-reach places to confuse criminals and buy precious time.

There’s also a lot of SMS-enabled solutions now that text your mobile phone too.
