Are you caught in a Paradigm Paralysis?

Posted by: Mitch Ribak on July 9th, 2008

As most of you know, I have been offering my help to HomeGain members and others to help them accomplish their Real Estate goals by maximizing the Internet. It’s been very rewarding to me knowing that I have helped many of you who now are earning a nice income by using the Internet. This actually isn’t for those people.

About half the Agents and Brokers that have contacted me for help have actually done nothing to further their Internet programs. I can’t keep track of everyone, but I do keep track of many by going back to their websites to see if they have made the recommended changes. At least 50% haven’t made any changes and are continuing to follow the “Old School” Real Estate model.

You know the one; you hope that someone recommends someone to use you. Or maybe someone will call on one of the magazine ads you spend $500-$1000 per month to receive 5 – 10 calls. ($1,000 on the Internet is 150-200 leads or 3-4 or more sales) Those are some expensive calls…especially when they just wanted to know the price and hung up on you!

Yup, I know you know what I’m talking about!

Ok, so what is Paradigm Paralysis? Let’s tell you a little story so you understand.
Years ago, the Swiss were known for their watch making abilities. At the time, they controlled 95% of the watch market. In the late 60’s (I’m not sure about the date) a guy contacted all the watch makers about a new concept for a watch. Being the old timers that they were, the watch makers yelled at this guy telling him that’s not how we make watches. Being a little depressed, the guy decided to go to Japan and pitch his idea there. The watch makers in Japan, who had less than 5% of the market, loved the new concept. The concept of course was LCD watches. Now the Swiss own less than 5% of the watch market.

This is Paradigm Paralysis. Being stuck in a time warp without the ability to change is a very sad place to be!

So what is holding you back from really diving into the Internet? Have you looked at your midyear numbers? Are you earning so much in commissions that it just isn’t worth your time to learn how to approach business by using the Internet? Maybe it’s because you really enjoy the “Old School” way of doing Real Estate and have no desire to do anything else.

I wish I could understand the lack of motivation. However, I don’t. I’ve always been a believer that if you are going to excel in any business, you need to do the opposite of what everyone else is doing. I can tell you, even with the amount of Realtors using the Internet, most of them don’t have a clue what they are doing.

This is a great opportunity for you to expand your business and reap the rewards of other Agents lack of desire or fear to use the Internet to generate business.

With all that said, if you are a Broker or part of a Team, you might want to check out my new company launching shortly called The eHomes Realty Network. If you are a real estate agent that would like some advice, I am glad to help. Just drop me a note or give me a call and I will check out your current situation and see what I can do to help you.

You can get a free website evaluation in which I will gladly take a look at your website to see if it is lead capture friendly.

In the end, all I really want to do is help people break out of their Paradigm Paralysis. Just ask yourself what you are doing different today than you were doing last year. Are you in the same place? If so, then it’s time to make a change!

As the Little River Band said, “Time for a cool change. I know that it’s time for a cool change”.

Hi Mitch,

I agree with you that many agents have an internet presence but don’t know how to effectively market online.

In order to affectively target the right audience, I have build niche sites. For example, I use for people looking for bank owned sites and for people looking for homes which are in short sale.

Because these sites are considered niche sites, they rank higher the search engines and more people will recommend this site to their friends because it works.

You are right Richard. It’s sort of a double edged sword for me. One part of me wants to help Agents understand and take advantage of what the Internet has to offer. The other side of me smacks myself in the head every time I write one of these blogs encouraging and helping Agents. Why in the world would I want to build competition against myself. I’m still trying to figure that one out.

I am simply amazed at the number of agent I see on a daily basis that have absolutely no clue about the paradigm shift we are in the midst of.

With the ease of creating a website these days, I don’t understand why agents don’t take advantage of this. To to enhance these sites even further, offers widgets that give listings and local market information with a link to much more.
