Have you sent a thank you note today?

In the age of technology, isn’t it nice to receive a card in the mail? It is much more memorable than receiving an email or a text message. The person who sent it took the time to write the note, put a stamp on it, and put it in the mail. It gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling to know someone cares about me that much.

Wouldn’t it be a nice gesture to send a thank you card to a client, business associate, or even a prospective client?

Here are some ideas:mail-thank-you-card

  • Thank a fellow Realtor for selling one of your listings.
  • Thank a mortgage broker for a job well done.
  • Thank a prospect who just signed up for IDX on your website.
  • Thank a prospect that took the time to call you.
  • Thank a home seller for listing with you.
  • Thanks for a referral.
  • Thank a potential home buyer after showing them properties.
  • Thank a prospect for filling out a CMA form on your website.
  • Thank a friend request on Facebook.
  • Thank a prospective seller after a listing appointment.
  • Thank every open house attendee.

You get the idea. Try to send out 5 cards or notes per day and see what kind of response you get. I think you will be pleased. Soon you will think of more and more fun occasions to send cards.

How Listening to the Wrong “Experts” Almost Ruined My Real Estate Career

Bad advice number 1

“Dont pay for leads.” “You are crazy if you pay for leads.” “The leads you receive are worthless.” “You can generate your own leads if you are worth your salt in real estate.”

I listened to this one for awhile. It did make sense, at first. I was working day and night to try to generate my own leads and I got plain burned out. So, I decided to give HomeGain a try. Technically, yes, I am paying for leads. Oh it is so nice to have leads come to me instead of spinning my wheels. Now I have time for other things like, meeting people!

Bad advice number 2

This one is very controversial. “Don’t pay for enhanced listings on”

I listened to this one from some very well respected folks in the industry. Well, I got a really nice listing and I gave in and got the enhanced listing package. I grew very tired of trying to explain to sellers why their listings aren’t showing multiple pictures. “Suzy Seller down the street has an enhanced listing.” Sellers don’t care about the politics of They just want to ooh and aah over the listing on They will go there to check on it. Even if you give them a hundred other websites to look at, they WILL check And I do get leads from Good ones.

Bad advice number 3

“Blogging is a waste of time.” “You are a Realtor not a blogger.”

Ok, I admit I am not a blogger. I try to blog. I am a real estate broker who happens to blog. I blog my listings and real estate news. Maybe a few jokes and community news now and again. It is very eclectic. It is MY blog. I can do whatever I want, darn it. Now I am even blogging on multiple sites. And the sweet majic is…..SEO! Can you say number one on Google? Marketing and the classic advertisement

When you see this picture, what do you think of? RCA perhaps? It is the RCA dog, Nipper.

He was born in 1884. The breed is thought to be Rat Terrier or possibly a Fox Terrier. I also have Rat Terriers. When they were puppies my friend told me they look like the RCA dog.

Here are pictures of my puppies. What do you think?

Free Stuff to Help Your Real Estate Biz

I love free stuff and am always thankful when I learn about it. Here are some websites that I use very often and they have helped me save time and money.

This is a presentation sharing website. You can upload just about any document or presentation and share it with others. I like to embed the presentations on my website. You can track how many times your presentation has been downloaded. It is also fun when your presentations are marked as favorites.

Google Docs

I use Google docs to store my documents online. Documents can be uploaded, saved, printed, and shared. Documents can also be converted to pdf files making them easier to send as email attachments. I got tired of certain documents being on my home computer and I needed them when I was at the office. No worries, now I just go to Google.

Another great Google product. Upload your pictures to create slideshows. You can add text and music or voiceover. Google will also send it to Youtube. Continue reading this post

What’s in My Feedreader?

The number one thing that has helped my real estate career has been reading blogs.

Through my years in real estate, I have gotten almost no help from my colleagues or brokers. The philosophy was that we were in direct competition with each other so we could not share our ideas or expertise because it might hurt our career. Almost no agents would divulge any of their so called “secrets”. If a real estate agent would give up any of their knowledge, it was at a price.

I am so glad I discovered Web 2.0. What I learned was it is ok to share knowledge and ideas. It will not hurt me. It will help build a supportive community and it will help the real estate industry as a whole.

Here are some things I have learned by reading blogs:

  • Social media, especially Twitter
  • About blogging and blogging ideas
  • All about video
  • Virtual tour options
  • Marketing techniques
  • Advertising
  • Real estate news
  • What to put on my website
  • How to treat clients

 And much, much more.

My favorite real estate blogs are: Continue reading this post
